Humberto Vainieri PhD MBA

Hum VainieriDr. Humberto Vainieri is a member of both our North American and European Development Experiences Blueprint™ Consulting Services Teams. Hum brings a rich and distinguished background including CEO and President of a $1B organization, top 40 executive in a Global 10 company, international management consulting (specializing in organizational restructuring and change management within the oil, gas and petrochemical industries), entrepreneurial start-ups and recognized best practice talent management experience.

Hum has extensive senior executive experience in international and global organizations including Yukos, UOP and BP. At Yukos, Hum was Senior Vice President of R&D and Engineering based in Moscow. He was responsible for establishing the technology organization and associated strategy within Yukos (covering upstream, downstream and chemicals) and recommended and implemented the disposal of a subsidiary engineering company.

Previously, Hum was President & CEO of UOP, the leading licensor of technology to the refining, petrochemicals and gas processing industries, with annual revenues of over one billion dollars. His accomplishments include: reducing the cost base by over $30 million annually (over 10% of general expenses); implemented new business processes to manage improved performance (e.g. forecasting, revenue chain, inventory management); reorganized business structure to achieve cost savings and operational efficiencies; changed culture to an open style with broad-based communications processes; and facilitated the improved delivery of new technologies by focusing R&D efforts on fewer, but higher impact projects. In 2003, UOP was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Technology for scientific contributions which was presented by President Bush at the White House.

Hum spent twenty-five years with BP (including Gulf Oil Corporation and Sohio) in a variety of refining, supply and planning roles in the States and Europe. His last role within BP was Executive Director, Downstream where he was a member of the Executive Committee for BP's downstream organization and one of the top 40 executives in the BP Group. During this period, the downstream generated after tax returns on capital employed of over 16% and profits reached record levels of nearly $1.5 billion. Accomplishments include: simplified the downstream company's organization by breaking down regional structures and creating 41 business units reporting straight into the Executive Committee; implemented a performance management process based on peer groupings of business units; and led the refining business units to the most profitable year on record with net income of nearly $600 million in 1998. As Director, Refining Pacesetter Project, Hum led a special project that increased the profits of BP's 14 refineries from near zero in 1995 to about $600 million in 1998. In this role, he conceived and led a change program which combined emphasis on technical excellence and innovations in crude oil/product supply with organizational learning principles. The success of this change program was featured in Peter Senge's 1999 book The Dance of Change.

During his time with BP, Hum spent two years as Head of Human Resources where he led the international HR function in the downstream business and the Learning & Development team across the BP Group, ensuring that HR strategy and policy were aligned with business direction. In this capacity, Hum was a member of the Group High Potential Committee, who were responsible for the identification, development and deployment of the Group's highest potential talent and other strategic talent management issues (including succession planning for top 200 jobs, strategic succession management and the identification and assessment of talent). This talent management program has been recognized as best practice. Linkage and leadership guru Warren Bennis collaborated on a study of 350 organizations worldwide and identified fifteen organizations with best practices in leadership development. These fifteen organizations each contributed a chapter to their highly regarded Best Practices in Leadership Development Handbook (1999 and 2000).

Hum was named 1999 Refining Executive of the Year by World Refining Magazine and Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Pittsburgh in 2003. Hum is multi-lingual with native fluency in Spanish and English, basic competency in French and Italian and beginner level Russian.

Hum earned his PhD and MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and his MBA from John Carroll University. He completed his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Hum is a member of the University of Pittsburgh Engineering School Advisory Board and was previously a member of the IMD Business Advisory Council in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Hum divides his time between Pittsburgh and Sarasota, Florida.
